How to Let Go of Excuses and Take Control of Your Goals
I used to have an excuse for everything. I was too busy, too tired, too overwhelmed. Every time I started working toward my goals, life would get in the way, and I’d tell myself, “Now just isn’t the right time.”
Sound familiar? Yeah, I thought so.
But one day, I had to face the truth—waiting for the “perfect time” was just another way of staying stuck. No one was coming to rescue me. No one was going to do the work for me. If I wanted change, I had to stop outsourcing my power and start owning it.
So I did. Not perfectly. Not overnight. But one small, messy, unglamorous step at a time.
The moment I stopped letting my excuses run the show and started showing up—everything shifted. And if I can do it, you can too.
1. Own Your Excuses (Even the Sneaky Ones)
Let’s be honest: we all have them. “I don’t have time.” “I don’t know where to start.” “I’ll wait until the kids are older.” But let me lovingly drag you real quick—those aren’t facts. They’re fear in disguise.
Every time you say “I don’t have time,” what you actually mean is “It’s not a priority right now.” And that’s fine! But OWN it. Because once you call out your excuses, you can choose something different.
Try this:
- Instead of “I don’t have time,” say, “I’ll make time for what matters.”
- Instead of “I don’t know how,” say, “I’ll learn as I go.”
- Instead of “I’ll start next week,” say, “Starting messy is better than not starting at all.”
Growth doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from honesty—and action.
2. Break It Down So It’s Impossible to Fail
Big goals are sexy. “Lose 50 pounds.” “Start a business.” “Write a book.” But that size of a dream will freeze you if you don’t break it down into steps that feel doable on your worst day.
Let’s make it practical:
- Goal: Get stronger? Step: Do 10 air squats while your coffee brews.
- Goal: Grow your biz? Step: Write one Instagram caption today.
- Goal: Eat healthier? Step: Add one veggie to your plate—just one.
You don’t need a 90-day plan. You need one decision. Then another. Then another.
Remember: the power is in the compounding. Tiny, consistent actions stack up faster than you think.
3. Stop Worshipping Motivation
Motivation is a vibe, not a plan. It’s the cute guy who flirts with you but never actually texts back. Unreliable AF.
What you need instead? Discipline and structure. Habits that carry you when your feelings ghost you.
Create rituals that are so simple, they’re automatic:
- Pick a workout time and make it sacred.
- Prep your clothes or food the night before.
- Use visual cues—habit trackers, alarms, sticky notes that say “Show up for her.”
You’re not lazy. You’re just relying on something that was never meant to be the driver.
4. Reframe Setbacks as Plot Twists, Not Proof
That moment you mess up? It’s not a dead end. It’s a plot twist in your comeback story.
Didn’t follow your plan? Cool—what did you learn?
Skipped your workout? Okay—how can you set yourself up better tomorrow?
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be resilient.
This is where real growth lives: in how you talk to yourself when things don’t go your way.
5. Get in Rooms With People Who Make You Rise
Your environment either reinforces your excuses or your evolution.
If your circle is filled with people who normalize complaining and quitting, it’s going to feel hard to push through. But when you’re surrounded by action-takers? You level up by default.
Find your people.
- Join communities that hold you accountable.
- Follow creators who inspire you and give you real tools.
- Choose voices that call you higher.
You deserve to be in rooms that remind you of your power—not your limits.
6. Track Progress Like a Scientist, Not a Critic
Stop using progress tracking as a way to beat yourself up. This isn’t about punishment—it’s about proof that you’re becoming the woman you said you wanted to be.
Track the things that matter:
- Did you drink water today?
- Did you keep a promise to yourself?
- Did you show up when it would’ve been easier not to?
Progress isn’t just the scale. It’s the consistency. The energy. The trust you’re rebuilding with yourself.
7. Take the First Step—Even If Your Voice Shakes
You don’t need to know every step. You just need to take the next one.
There will never be a “perfect time.” There will only ever be now. So let today be the day you start moving. Not because you’re ready—but because you’re done waiting.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. And watch what happens when you stop standing in your own way.
